حصير ḥaṣīr A (from حصر) s. m. A mat.

حل ḥall A (Heb. ) s. m. Solution, loosing. حلکاري ḥall-kārī, s. f. Gilding. حل کرنا ḥall karnā, To loosen, to solve, to dissolve, discuss, dilute. حل هونا hall honā, To be solved, loosened, resolved, dissolved, &c.

حزين ḥazīn A (from حزن) adj. Sad, sorrowful, afflicted, melancholy, grieved.

حضوري ḥuẓūr-ī A. s. m. An attendant, courtier. s. f. Presence. adj. Of the court, royal, divine.

حاضراتي ḥāẓirāt-ī A s. f. Commanding evil spi rits, &c., a conjurer, exorciser.

A re- tention of urine, a strangury. حبس النفس ḥabsu-n-nafas, Suffocation. حبس دم ḥabs-i-dam, s. m. 1. Retaining the breath (which some fa- ḳirs do as a religious act for a very long time. This is esteemed a means of prolonging life, on the principle, that every man has a predestined number of inspirations to make, and the more slowly these are performed, the longer will be the period of his existence). 2. An asthma. A. H. حبشني ḥabshanī, s. f. A female Abyssinian.

حجاز ḥijāz A (from حجز To restrain, to intervene, to separate) s. m. 1. Mecca and the adjacent country, Arabia Petræa. (Arabia is by some divided into two parts only; viz. Yaman and Ḥijāz: others make of it five divisions; namely, Yaman, Tihāma, Najd, Aﻌrūẓ and Ḥijāz. Ḥijāz is the chain of mountains extending from Yaman to Syria; and has this name from intervening between Najd and Tihāma). 2. Name of one of the three principal Persian modes of musick (the other two being اسفـﮩ‍ان isfahān and عراق iﻌrāḳ).

حجم ḥajm A s. f. Thickness, bigness.

حراج ḥirāj A s. plur. (of حرجة) Flocks of camels, thickets of trees.

حکايت ḥikāyat A (from حکو or حکي To nar- rate, Heb. The palate; speech) s. f. A history, romance, story, tale, narration.
