ز ze called زاي معجمه or زاي منقوطه is the eleventh letter of the Arabic, and the thirteenth of the Persian alphabet. It has no corresponding letter in the Sanskrit alphabet; and, ज (j) is

زاج zāj A s. m. Copperas, vitriol. زاج سفيد zāj-i-sufaid, s. m. Alum.

زاد zād A s. m. Food, provisions. زاد راه zād- i-rāh or زاد راحله zād-i-rāḥila, s. m. Way- charges, provisions for travelling.

زار zār P 1. s. m. Desire, wish. 2. A groan, la- mentation. 3. adj. Afflicted, groaning, lamenting. زار زار zār-zār, Great lamentation. زارنالي zār-nālī, Lamentation. زارو نزار zār-o-nizār, Emaciated. 4. (in compos.) It implies place, multitude; as, گلزار gul-zār, s. m. A garden of roses.

زاري zār-ī P s. f. Crying, sighing, groaning, la- mentation, supplication, crying for help.

زاغ zāg̠ẖ P s. m. A crow. زاغ آبي zāg̠ẖ-i-ābī, A coot.

زال zāl P 1. adj. Old, decrepit, grey-haired (man or woman). 2. n. prop. (or زال زر) The name of the father of Rustam, and son of Sām, son of Narīmān. He was called زال زر (zāl-i-zar) because he came into the world with white hair, and a red countenance; the former like that of an old man, the latter of golden hue.

زانو zānū P (s. जानु) s. m. The knee, the lap.

زاني zānī P (part. act. of زنا Heb. To commit adultery) s. m. An adulterer, a whoremonger.

زانيه zāniya A (part. act. of زنا) s. f. A whore, a strumpet, an adultress.

زاهد zāhid A (part. act. of زهد) 1. s. m. A monk, a hermit, a recluse, a zealot. زاهدا zāhid-ā, O zealot! 2. adj. Religious, devout. (Pers. plur. زاهدان zāhidān). A. P. زاهدي zāhid-ī, s. f. The life of a recluse, devotion.
