حبس ḥabs A (Heb. ) s. m. 1. Retention, imprisonment. 2. Prison. 3. A prisoner. 4. A bank, mound, dam. 5. A tank, pond, re- servoir. حبس البول ḥabsu-l-baul, s. m. A re- tention of urine, a strangury. حبس النفس ḥabsu-n-nafas, Suffocation. حبس دم ḥabs-i-dam, s. m. 1. Retaining the breath (which some fa- ḳirs do as a religious act for a very long time. This is esteemed a means of prolonging life, on the principle, that every man has a predestined number of inspirations to make, and the more slowly these are performed, the longer will be the period of his existence). 2. An asthma. A. H. حبشني ḥabshanī, s. f. A female Abyssinian.

حاسد ḥāsid A (from حسد) 1. adj. Envious. 2. s. m. An enemy. (Pers. plur. حاسدان).

حرس ḥirs A s. m. Same as حراست q. v.

حفظ ḥifz̤ A s. m. 1. Memory. 2. Custody, keeping, guardianship, protection, preservation. حفظ مراتب ḥifz̤-i-marātib, Observing etiquette, attention to the rank, &c. of persons addressed.

حنظل ḥanz̤al A s. Coloquinteda or bitter apple, colocynth.

حرث ḥars̤ A (Heb. ) s. m. Ploughing, cul- tivating, sowing; a ploughshare.

حجام ḥajjām A (adj. superl. from حجامت) s. m. A cupper, scarifier, barber, shaver, phlebotomist.

حيص بيص ḥaiṣ baiṣ A (حيص To escape, to re- treat, and بيص Adversity, calamity, confusion) s. f. Perplexity, hesitation, suspense, a per- plexed business, dilemma.

حيرت ḥairat A s. f. Stupor and perturbation of mind, astonishment, amazement. حيرت افزا ḥairat-afzā or حيرت فزا ḥairat-fazā, Astonishing. حيرت زده ḥairat-zada, Struck with asto- nishment, thunderstruck, aghast, amazed. حيرت مآب ḥairat-maʼāb, adj. Astonished.

حقيقت ḥaḳīḳat A (from حقّ) s. f. 1. Truth, rightness, sincerity, reality, fact. 2. Account, narration, relation, story, state, condition, expla- nation.
