حبس ḥabs A (Heb. ) s. m. 1. Retention, imprisonment. 2. Prison. 3. A prisoner. 4. A bank, mound, dam. 5. A tank, pond, re- servoir. حبس البول ḥabsu-l-baul, s. m. A re- tention of urine, a strangury. حبس النفس ḥabsu-n-nafas, Suffocation. حبس دم ḥabs-i-dam, s. m. 1. Retaining the breath (which some fa- ḳirs do as a religious act for a very long time. This is esteemed a means of prolonging life, on the principle, that every man has a predestined number of inspirations to make, and the more slowly these are performed, the longer will be the period of his existence). 2. An asthma. A. H. حبشني ḥabshanī, s. f. A female Abyssinian.

حواشي ḥawāshī A s. plur. (of حاشيه) Skirts, margins, borders.

حيراني ḥairān-ī A. s. f. Astonishment, perturba- tion, confusion or distraction (of mind), dis- tress.

حديث ḥadīs̤ A (from حدث) s. m. f. 1. A his- tory, a tradition. 2. The traditional sayings of Muhammad. حديث کرنا ḥadīs̤ karnā, To for- swear, to abjure, to renounce.

حماما ḥamāmā A s. Amomum.

حجامت ḥajāmat A (from حجم He cupped, &c.) s. f. Cupping, scarifying, shaving. A. H. حجامني ḥajjām-anī, s. f. (dakh.) Barberʼs wife.

حام ḥām A n. prop. (Heb. ) Ham son of Noah.

حسب ḥasb A adv. 1. Agreeably, conformably, according to, in conformity with. 2. s. m. Com- puting, reflecting upon, considering. 3. Suffi- ciency. 4. See ḥasab, sign. 3. and 4. حسب الامکان ḥasbu-l-imkān, As far as possible. حسب الامر ḥasbu-l-amr, or حسب الارشاد ḥasbu-l-irshād,

حل ḥall A (Heb. ) s. m. Solution, loosing. حلکاري ḥall-kārī, s. f. Gilding. حل کرنا ḥall karnā, To loosen, to solve, to dissolve, discuss, dilute. حل هونا hall honā, To be solved, loosened, resolved, dissolved, &c.

حيضي ḥaiẓ-ī A. adj. (used substantively) A wicked brat.
