ه hā : ه hā called هاي هوز hā-i-hawwaz and هاي مدوره hā-i-mudawwara, the twenty-seventh letter of the Arabic and thirty-first of the Persian alphabet, corresponds to ह in Sanskrit. It is one of the guttural letters, having the sound of the English h. When it occurs at the end of a word, it is either perceptible, which is called هاي ظاهريا جلي يا ملفوظي (hā-i-z̤āhir or -jalī, or -malfūz̤ī), as in بادشاه bādshāh, A king; or imperceptible مختفي يا مکتوبي (-muḵẖtafī or -maktūbī), as in بہانه bahāna, A pretence, به ba, With, &c. where it merely conveys the sound of fatʼḥa. In the formation of the plural with ها the هاي جلي of the singular is preserved;

هوچنا hūchnā H v. a. To miss, to err, to mistake.

هاها hāhā H s. m. Flattery, importunity, earnest request, supplication. هاها کهانا hāhā khānā, To flatter, to wheedle, to entreat, beseech.

هتهيلي hath-elī S̱. (from هاتهہ) s. f. The palm of the hand.

هدي hudạ̄ A (Heb. ) s. m. Pointing out the right way, guidance in the right way. ¶ hadī, s. f. 1. Cattle carried to Mecca to be sacrificed. 2. Giving as an offering. 3. A bride. 4. A captive.

هردي हृदय hr̤idaya S s. m. Heart, breast, &c. See هردا hirdā.

هلکورنا halkornā S̱. (see هلکور) v. a. 1. To gather, to collect. 2. To billow, to wave. ¶ hilkornā, v. a. To agitate, to shake, disturb, to perplex. v. n. To fluctuate, to waver.

هلاٴي hal-āʼī S̱. (from हल) s. f. Ploughing.

هشت hisht P s. m. A hiss, &c. interj. Pish! avaunt! hist! away!

هلدهر हलधर hal-dhar S or hala-dhara, s. m. A name of Balarāma, the elder brother of Kr̤ish̤ṇa.

هجوم hujūm A (from هجم) s. m. A crowd, a mob, concourse, throng, an assault, attack, im- petuosity. هجوم کرنا hujūm karnā, To rush (upon).
