نوکا नौका naukā S s. f. A boat.

نصيب naṣīb A (from نصب Heb. and Aram. ) s. m. Fortune, lot, luck, chance, portion, part, fate, destiny. (In Hindūstānī this word is often constructed as a plural). نصيب لڙني na- ṣīb laṛne, 1. To be competitor for any thing. 2. (lit. fortune fighting for one) The commence- ment of prosperity, to be greatly favoured by fortune (after adversity). نصيب جگنا naṣīb jagnā, To be fortunate.

نسا निशा nisā S s. f. Night. نسچر nis-char, s. m. A prowler: see نساچر beneath. نسچراٴي nis- char-āʼī, s. f. Prowling. نسچراٴي کرنا nis-char-āʼī karnā, To prowl. نساچر निशाचर nisā-char, 1. A demon. 2. A robber, a thief. 3. A noc- turnal animal, an animal that watches and feeds by night. نساکر يا نساناتهـ निशाचर nisā-kar, or निशानाथ nisā-nāth, The moon.

نجس najis A adj. Dirty, impure, filthy, nasty. نجس العين najisu-l-aﻌin, Impure by nature. ¶ najas, Dirtiness, filth, dung.

نمايان numāyān P (part. act. from نمودن) adj. Appearing, apparent, evident, conspicuous, bold (a picture).

نہارنون nihārnauṅ S̱. (in Braj) v. a. See نہارنا nihārnā.

نيمي nem-ī नियमी S̱. adj. Conscientious, ab- stemious, continent, chaste.

ندا nidā A s. f. Sound, voice, calling, call to prayer, proclamation, vocative.

نل नल nal S s. m. 1. A tube, spout, joint of bamboo or other hollow wood. 2. The bamboo which fowlers use to entangle game by applying birdlime to the top of it. نل چلانا nal-chalānā, Setting the bamboos in motion, denotes a ma- gical practice adopted for the discovery of theft. Two pieces of split bamboo, of equal lengths, are applied to one another side by side, and held by two men, one at each end. It is said that any persons taken at random may be em- ployed for this purpose. Then the magician pronounces certain incantations, the efficacy of which is pretended to be such, that the bam- boos spontaneously move towards the place where the thief or the stolen goods are, and drag the men along with them. نل در نل nal dar nal, One tube within another. 3. Name of a king, and hero of several poetical works fa- mous among the Hindūs.
