صيانت ṣiyānat A s. f. Defence, guarding, keeping, preservation, support.

صادر ṣādir A (part. act. of صدر) adj. Proceeding, produced, derived, happened, arrived, passed, issued. صادرهونا ṣādir honā, To proceed, to be produced, derived, emerged, issued, &c.

صيغه ṣīg̠ẖa A (from صوغ) s. m. 1. A mould (for casting metal). 2. A word declinable and de- rivative. 3. The mood, tense, or voice of a verb, conjugation, derivation. 4. Trade, pro- fession. 5. A form of words used in marriage ceremonies. (Plur. صيغ).

صمت ṣamt A s. f. Silence. ¶ ṣimmat, Adverse fortune.

صحن ṣaḥn A s. m. 1. A court-yard, an area. 2. A large cup or goblet. 3. A small dish or plate.

صل عليٰ ṣall-aﻌlā A Blessed; very fine. See صليٰ الله عليه under صليٰ ṣallạ̄.

صفراي ṣafrā-ī A. adj. Bilious.

صندل ṣandal A (from Sans. चंदन) s. m. San- dal wood, sanders. A.H. صندلوٿا ṣandal-auṭā, s. m. A stone on which sandal wood is ground.

صندوقي ṣandūḳ-ī A. adj. Like a box. (Applied to a tomb and a scabbard of a sword made in that form).

صفر ṣafar A or ṣafaru-l-muz̤affar, s. m. The se- cond month of the Muhammadan year. (On the 20th day of this month is held the festival of Sarotan, in commemoration of the junction of the head and body of Ḥusain. The 28th and the last days of this month are reckoned unfortunate; the former on account of Ḥasanʼs being poisoned by his wife; the latter because destructive vegetables are supposed to be pro- duced on that day). ¶ ṣifr, s. m. A cipher.
