صفر ṣafar A or ṣafaru-l-muz̤affar, s. m. The se- cond month of the Muhammadan year. (On the 20th day of this month is held the festival of Sarotan, in commemoration of the junction of the head and body of Ḥusain. The 28th and the last days of this month are reckoned unfortunate; the former on account of Ḥasanʼs being poisoned by his wife; the latter because destructive vegetables are supposed to be pro- duced on that day). ¶ ṣifr, s. m. A cipher.

صوره ṣūra A. s. See صورت ṣūrat.

صلوة ṣalāt A s. f. 1. Prayer, benediction. 2. Compassion or mercy of God.

صوبه ṣūba A s. m. 1. A province. 2. A governour. (Term peculiar to Hindūstān). A.P. صوبه دار ṣūba-dār, s. m. 1. The chief, viceroy, or lieutenant of a province. 2. A military offi- cer among Indian troops, whose rank corres- ponds to that of captain. A.P. صوبه داري ṣūba-dār-ī, s. f. The office of lieu- tenant of a province, the government of a صوبه ṣūba or province.

صنم ṣanam A (Heb. ) s. m. l. An idol. 2. A mistress, lover, sweetheart. 3. The name of a game among children: one says, صنم آي ṣanam āʼe, The idol or sweetheart is come; and asks whence? in which dress is she clothed? what does she eat? &c. With whatever letter the answer to the first question begins, those to the others must begin with the same; otherwise, the person failing is condemned, by way of pe- nalty, to imitate the voice of some animal, as a cock or ass, &c.

صحنک ṣaḥnak A. s. f. See سہنک sahnak.

صومعه ṣaumaʼaﻌ A s. m. A monastery.

صوم ṣaum A (Heb. ) 1. s. m. Fasting, a fast. 2. One who fasts. 3. A christian church. 4. adj. Silent. صوم صلوة ṣaum ṣalāt, s. f. Fasting and prayer.

صغير ṣag̠ẖīr A (from صغر) adj. Small, slender, inferiour, junior. صغيرسن ṣag̠ẖīr-sinn, adj. Of tender age.

صہبا ṣahbā A s. Wine, especially red wine.
