نياٴي nyāʼī न्यायी S̱. s. m. 1. A distributor of justice. 2. A logician.

ن nūn The twenty-fifth letter of the Arabic and twenty-ninth of the Persian alphabet, corre- sponds to न in Sanskrit. It is one of the dental letters, and has the sound of the English n, with the following exceptions. 1. When it is quiescent in the middle or end of a word, and follows a madda or simple long vowel, it has a very slight nasal sound; as, in زبون Bad, زمان Time, زمين The earth, ماندن To remain: this is called نون غنب nūn-i-g̠ẖunna. If, how- ever, the word at the end of which it occurs be so placed in composition that the ن become moveable by iẓāfat, it ceases to be nasal and resumes its original sound as a dental letter. 2. When it precedes ب or پ it has the sound of m; as, in منبر mimbar, A pulpit; سنپت

نوح nūḥ Heb. n. prop. Noah. (Erroneously stated by Musalmān authors to be so called from his lamentations on account of the obsti- nacy of mankind who rejected his admonitions; but, really from Heb. To rest, to be com- forted or freed from pain. Gen. V. 29.).

نفقه nafaḳa A s. m. The necessary expenses for living.

نرم narm P adj. 1. Soft, tender, mild. 2. De- fective (coin). 3. Easy, gentle, ductile, silly.

نيٿ nīṭ H adj. (dakh.) See سيدها sīdhā.

نيگ neg H s. f. Presents at marriages and on other festive occasions made to relations and to particular servants, and considered by them as perquisites which they are entitled to.

نيويديه नैवेद्य naivedya S s. m. See نيبيد naibed.

نايب nāʼịb A (part. act. of نوب Heb. and Aram. ) s. m. A deputy, delegate, vicegerent, at- torney. نايب مناب nāʼịb manāb, A vicege- rent, a locum tenens, a successor. A. P. نايبي nāʼịb-ī, s. (dakh.) Deputyship, vice- gerency, agency, delegation. S̱. H. نايچ nā-īch, adv. (dakh.) Not, no: see نـﮩين nahīṅ.

ناريل nāriyal नारिकेल S̱. s. m. 1. A cocoa- nut. 2. A ḥuḳḳa made of a cocoa-nut. 3. A sort of firework, so called from the shell of the cocoa-nut being charged for the purpose. It bursts with the report of a gun. (Qanoon-e-islam).
