قاف ḳāf A (from قوف To trace oneʼs footsteps, or rather Heb. and Chald. To revolve or go round) s. m. A fabulous mountain, supposed to surround the world, and bound the horizon. It rests on the stone Sakhrat, an entire emerald, which covers the azure colour of the sky. 2. Mount Caucasus.

قرعه ḳurʼaﻌ A (from قرع Heb. To split, to tear, to break, to knock) s. m. 1. A lot (es- pecially, one cast in the manner of the Arabs, by shooting arrows). 2. A wager, wagering, drawing lots, seeking to learn oneʼs fortune by opening a book, &c.

قرابين ḳarābīn Fr. s. f. A carbine. (French, ca- rabine).

قفس ḳafas A (Heb. and Chald. To re- strain, to shut up) s. m. A cage, a lattice, network.

قنديل ḳandīl A s. f. 1. A candle. 2. Lantern, chandelier, shade.

قيصوم ḳaiṣūm A s. m. Southernwood. (Artemi- sia abrotanum).

قبض ḳabẓ A (Heb. To meet together, to contract) s. f. 1. Contraction. 2. Costiveness. 3. A receipt. 4. Tax, tribute. قبض الوصول ḳabẓu-l-wuṣūl, s. f. A receipt, acknowledgment. قبض کرنا ḳabẓ karnā, To seize, take possession of. قبض هونا ḳabẓ honā, To be seized, &c.

قلقل ḳulḳul A s. f. m. The noise made by water in the neck of a bottle when pouring out, gug- gling. ¶ ḳilḳil, A plant producing a black odoriferous grain, (said to be) the pomegranate of the desert.

قلت ḳillat A (from قلّ Heb. To be light or little) s. f. Littleness, penury, scarcity, want, indigence, paucity, fewness, scantiness.

قنات ḳanāt A s. f. The walls of a tent, or can- vass enclosure with which a sort of court yard is formed in camp, a screen.
