شام shām P 1. s. f. Evening. 2. (a) s. m. Sy- ria. شام کي مرديکوکب تک روٴيي shām ke murde ko kab tak roʼiye, is applied to express a circumstance which is likely to be a subject of regret for life. (The expression is taken from the custom, among the relations of a dead per- son, of venting loud lamentations while the corpse remains in the house. If the death hap- pens in the morning, the body is soon removed; but, if towards evening, it remains till next morning; in which case the mourners are apt to be overtaken by sleep).

شکست shikast P (from شکستن) 1. s. f. Breaking, fracture, deficiency, loss, defeat. 2. (for شکسته q. v.) adj. Broken, odd, uneven, unpaired. شکست خورده shikast-ḵẖụrda, adj. Broken off, interrupted, defeated.
