شيخ shaiḵẖ A (vulg. sheḵẖ) s. m. An old man, a venerable old man; a chief, a prelate, a title taken by the descendants of the prophet, and given to proselytes to Muhammadanism. شيخًا shaiḵẖaṉ, adv. In the manner of a chief, au- thoritatively. شيخ ڐونڐو shaiḵẖ-ḍoṅḍū, A figure dressed up by way of sport or charm. شيخنا shaiḵẖanā, MyLord! my preceptor! my patron!

شاخچه shāḵẖ-cha P s. m. Branch, small branch.

شناخت shināḵẖt P (from شناختن) s. f. Know- ledge, understanding.

شافه shāffa A (part. act. f. from شفّ To be fine, or thin, to extenuate, to pinch as cold: Chald. To scrape, to rub, to plaster, to polish) s. m. A bougie, a pessary, a suppository.

شہاب shihāb A s. m. 1. A bright star, a falling star, a meteor. 2. Flame. 3. (Pers.) ¶ sha- hāb, A red colour.

شہري shahr-ī P s. m. A citizen, or any thing be- longing to the city, a townsman.

شکنجه shikanja P s. m. 1. Stocks (for the legs). 2. Boards in which binders press books. 3. A press. 4. Rack, torment, torture.

شلتاقي shiltāḳ-ī P adj. Quarrelsome, quarrelling without reason.

شيطنت shait̤anat A s. f. Devilʼs tricks, wickedness.

شاخسار shāḵẖ-sār P (شاخ and the particle سار q. d. full of branches) s. f. A garden, bower.
