شاغل shāg̠ẖil A part. act. (of شغل) Occupied, employed, attentive.

شق shaḳḳ A (Heb. To run about) s. m. 1. Trouble, labour, suspense. 2. Dawn of day. 3. A fissure, crack, rent, cleft. شق القمر shaḳḳu-l-ḳamar, Splitting of the moon. شق هونا shaḳḳ honā, To be torn, to be split, rent, &c. ¶ shiḳḳ, s. f. The half of a thing, the side of a mountain, a brother, a friend, difficulty.

شمع shamﻌ A s. f. 1. A lamp, a candle. 2. Wax. شمعدان shamﻌ-dān, s. m. A candlestick. شمع ساز shamﻌ-sāz, A chandler, a candle-maker. شمع رخ shamﻌ-ruḵẖ, Red-cheeked. شمع رو shamﻌ-rū, Having a countenance resplendent as the candle. A.P. شمعي رنگ sham-īﻌ rang, Flame-colour.

شہپر shah-par P s. m. Strongest feather in a birdʼs wing.

شمال shamāl A or shimāl (Heb. from شمل Heb. To comprehend, surround, encircle) s. m. 1. The north. 2. The north wind. 3. The left hand (see under داهنا dāhinā). شمال رو shimāl-rū, Facing the north. شمال نما shimāl- numā, A marinerʼs compass.

شفق shafaḳ A (Heb. To applaud. Chald. To suffice, to be in doubt, q. d. between day and night) s. m. 1. Evening twilight. 2. Con- dolence, sympathy, kindness. 3. Fear.

شده shuda P part. pass. (of شدن) Become, having become, gone, lost.

شنکراچاري shankarāchārī S̱. The followers of Shankarāchārj, q. v.

شارح shāriḥ A (part. act. from شرح) s. Com- mentator, annotator, expositor.

شہريار shahr-yār P (شہر City and يار Friend, aid) s. m. A prince, a king.
