شعاري shiʼāﻌr-ī A adj. Of or relating to cus- tom, &c.

شارک shārak P s. m. A species of nightingale, or a bird of a dark colour that talks like a par- rot, perhaps the mainā or starling. S. شاستر शास्त्र (r. शास govern, teach) shāstr, s. m. 1. An order or command. 2. Scripture, science, institutes of religion, law or letters, es- pecially considered as of divine origin or au- thority.

شريفه sharīfa A. s. m. A custard apple. (Annona squamosa).

شفق shafaḳ A (Heb. To applaud. Chald. To suffice, to be in doubt, q. d. between day and night) s. m. 1. Evening twilight. 2. Con- dolence, sympathy, kindness. 3. Fear.

شگوفه shugūfa P or shigūfa, or (in Hind.) shagū- fa, s. m. A flower, a bud. شگوفه لانا shugūfa lānā, 1. To bud, to put forth young shoots. 2. To produce something new and wonderful.

شکوه shakwa A (improp. shikwā) s. m. Com- plaint, upbraiding. شکوه مند shakwa-mand, adj. Full of complaint. شکوه ناکي shakwa-nāk-ī, s. f. Fulness of complaint.

شه shah P (contract. of شاه) s. m. 1. A king. 2. Check (at chess). 3. (in compos. it means) Royal, great, large, &c. شہا shah-ā, O king. شہباز shah-bāz, The royal falcon. شه زور shah- zor, adj. شاد ماني shād-mān-ī P s. f. Pleasure, delight, joy, rejoicing, gayety, gladness.

شام shām P 1. s. f. Evening. 2. (a) s. m. Sy- ria. شام کي مرديکوکب تک روٴيي shām ke murde ko kab tak roʼiye, is applied to express a circumstance which is likely to be a subject of regret for life. (The expression is taken from the custom, among the relations of a dead per- son, of venting loud lamentations while the corpse remains in the house. If the death hap- pens in the morning, the body is soon removed; but, if towards evening, it remains till next morning; in which case the mourners are apt to be overtaken by sleep).

شکرستان shakar-istān P s. A place where sugar- canes grow. A.P. شکرانه shukr-āna, s. m. Gratitude, acknow- ledgment of gratitude, thanksgiving.
