شايستگي shāyasta-gī P s. f. Affability, fitness, aptitude, propriety, expediency, consistency.

شاهد shāhid A (Heb. Chald. from شہد Chald. To testify) 1. s. m. A witness. 2. (in Pers.) s. m. f. A sweetheart. 3. A female friend, a beloved object. شاهد حال shāhid-i-ḥāl, A witness of facts. شاهد روز shāhid-i-roz, s. m. The sun.

شيشه shīsha P s. m. Glass, a bottle, a glass. شيشه باز shīsha-bāz, A juggler. شيشه بازي shī- sha-bāz-ī, s. f. Juggle, legerdemain. شيشه باشا shīsha-bāshā, adj. Very delicate, tender. شيشه ساعت shīsha-e sāʼaﻌt, An hour-glass. شيشه گر shīsha-gar, A glass-maker. شيشه گري shīsha- gar-ī, s. f. Glass-making. شيشه محل shīsha- maḥall, A house or palace all hung with glass, a cabinet adorned with glass.

شباروز shab-ā-roz P (same as شب وروز) adv. Night and day, i. e. always.

شاخول shāḵẖūl P s. m. Name of a grain. (Cy- tisus cajan).

شوق shauḳ A (Heb. q. d. motion or ten- dency towards any point, from To walk hastily, to run about) s. m. 1. Desire, inclina- tion, love, eagerness, avidity, fondness. 2. Gaye- ty, cheerfulness. 3. Curiosity. شوق ذوق shauḳ- ẕauḳ, s. m. Pleasure, delight, gratification. A.P. شوقي shauḳ-ī, adj. Desirous, desirer. A.P. شوقين shauḳ-īn, adj. 1. Intent upon, desirous, eager. 2. Lascivious.

شام shām P 1. s. f. Evening. 2. (a) s. m. Sy- ria. شام کي مرديکوکب تک روٴيي shām ke murde ko kab tak roʼiye, is applied to express a circumstance which is likely to be a subject of regret for life. (The expression is taken from the custom, among the relations of a dead per- son, of venting loud lamentations while the corpse remains in the house. If the death hap- pens in the morning, the body is soon removed; but, if towards evening, it remains till next morning; in which case the mourners are apt to be overtaken by sleep).

شہري shahr-ī P s. m. A citizen, or any thing be- longing to the city, a townsman.
