زال zāl P 1. adj. Old, decrepit, grey-haired (man or woman). 2. n. prop. (or زال زر) The name of the father of Rustam, and son of Sām, son of Narīmān. He was called زال زر (zāl-i-zar) because he came into the world with white hair, and a red countenance; the former like that of an old man, the latter of golden hue.

زير zer P 1. adv. Under, below. 2. adj. In- feriour, lower. 3. s. The vowel point called by the Arabians کسره marked thus (ِ) and sounded like the Italian i. زيرانداز zer-andāz, s. m. The cloth, or carpet, which is spread under a ḥuḳḳa. زيربارهونا zer bār honā, To be in- debted, to undergo a great expense. زيربند zer-band, s. m. A martingal. زيردست zer- dast, 1. s. m. A subject, a vassal. 2. adj. Powerless, under command, subdued, van- quished. زيرران zer-i-rān, adj. Subject, under control, (any animal) ridden on. زيرکرنا zer- karnā, To overpower, to subdue. زيرلب zer- i-lab, Under the lip, inarticulate, mumbling. زيرلب کـہنا zer lab kahnā, To speak softly and inarticulately, to mumble, mutter. زيرلبي zer-i-lab-ī, adj. Inarticulate, slightly uttered (a word, &c.). زيرنگين zer-i-nagīn, adj. Sub- missive, subject. زيروزبر zer-o-zabar, adj. Topsyturvy, inverted, overturned, ruined.

زهّاد zuhhād A s. plur. of زاهد zāhid, q. v.

زاد zād P m. part. pass. (from زادن) used in compos. Born; (sub- stantively) A son, a child; as, آدمي زاد ādmī-zād, A man, born of man; پري زاد parī-zād, Born of an angel or fairy, a beautiful woman; شـﮩزاده shah-zāda, A prince; شـﮩزادي shah-zādī, A princess. زاد بوم zād- būm, Native land, native place.

زکوات zakawāt A s. plur. (of زکاة) Alms.

زه zih P 1. s. f. A bowstring. 2. The border or edge of any thing, the collar or facing of a garment. 3. interj. Excellent! bravo!

زيادتي ziyādatī A. f. (from زيد) 1. s. Augmen- tation, increase, addi- tion, surplus, excess. 2. adj. More, additional, too many, too much, excessive. زياده سر zi- yāda-sar, adj. Conceited, too vain of self. زياده سري ziyāda-sar-ī, s. f. Self-conceit, the having too high an opinion of self. زياده طلب ziyāda- t̤alab, Extortioner. زياده طلبي ziyāda-t̤alab-ī, s. f. Seeking more or too much, ambition, covetuousness, extortion, imposition. زياده کرنا ziyāda karnā, 1. To augment, to increase. 2. (met.) To take away the dinner and tablecloth. زياده هونا ziyāda honā, To exceed, to surpass.

زره zirah P (prop. zirih) s. f. Iron armour made with rings. زره پوش zirah-posh, A man in ar- mour.

زلزله zalzala A (from زلزل) s. m. An earthquake.
