زٿل zaṭal H (corrupt. from جٿل) s. f. Chattering, talking much and foolishly, quibbling, tattle. زٿل مارنا zaṭal mārnā, To chatter, to talk non- sense. زٿل هانکنا zaṭal hānknā, To quibble.

زاهد zāhid A (part. act. of زهد) 1. s. m. A monk, a hermit, a recluse, a zealot. زاهدا zāhid-ā, O zealot! 2. adj. Religious, devout. (Pers. plur. زاهدان zāhidān). A. P. زاهدي zāhid-ī, s. f. The life of a recluse, devotion.

زياد ziyād A (from زيد) 1. s. Augmen- tation, increase, addi- tion, surplus, excess. 2. adj. More, additional, too many, too much, excessive. زياده سر zi- yāda-sar, adj. Conceited, too vain of self. زياده سري ziyāda-sar-ī, s. f. Self-conceit, the having too high an opinion of self. زياده طلب ziyāda- t̤alab, Extortioner. زياده طلبي ziyāda-t̤alab-ī, s. f. Seeking more or too much, ambition, covetuousness, extortion, imposition. زياده کرنا ziyāda karnā, 1. To augment, to increase. 2. (met.) To take away the dinner and tablecloth. زياده هونا ziyāda honā, To exceed, to surpass.

زردشت zardusht P n. prop. Zoroaster, founder of the ancient religion of Persia.

زندان zindān P s. m. A prison.

زراعت zirāʼaﻌt A (from زرع Heb. To scatter seed, to sow) s. f. Agriculture, husbandry, sowing, sown field, sown land, crop.

زلو zalū P s. f. A leech. P. A. زله zalla, s. m. Victuals carried home by the guests from an entertainment.

زفاف zifāf A (from زفّ) s. m. Leading the bride home to her husbandʼs house.

ز ze called زاي معجمه or زاي منقوطه is the eleventh letter of the Arabic, and the thirteenth of the Persian alphabet. It has no corresponding letter in the Sanskrit alphabet; and, ज (j) is
