دري darī P s. f. 1. A small carpet. 2. A dialect of the Persian language, the origin and pecu- liarities of which are variously defined by Persian lexicographers. Some alledge its distinctive mark to be when the form of the word is com- plete, without contraction; as bugo, ishkam, Darī; go and shikam, Pārsī. Others make it the dialect of a certain district, comprehending Balkh, Bukhārā, Badakhshān, Marū-Shāh-Jān, and Bāmiyān. The name is by some said to be derived from dara, a valley among hills; which corresponds with its origin in Badakh- shān and the mountainous part of Kandhār. Others assert that it was spoken at the court of the monarchs of the Kaiānian dynasty, and derive the name from dar a gate or dargāh a
