دون dūn A adj. Base, mean, ignoble, inferiour, poor, vile. دون همت dūn-himmāt, adj. Mean- spirited, low-minded.

ديوالي dewālī S̱. (दीपाली from दीप A lamp, and आली A row) s. f. A Hindū festival (ce- lebrated on the day of the new moon of kārtik: when the Hindūs, after bathing in the Ganges, or other river, put on their best attire, perform a srāddha, and at night worship Laksh̤mī. The houses and streets are illuminated all night: and, in Hindūstān, the night is universally spent in gaming).

داسا dāsā H s. m. 1. A piece of wood sticking out from a wall to support the thatch (or chhap- par). 2. A reapinghook. (Sans. दात्र).

دهد هچهر dhadhhachchhar S̱. or dadhachchhar, (दग्धाक्षर Burnt letters) s. m. In versifica- tion, certain words or letters, which are reckoned by poets to be unlucky. (The letters ह ग न in the beginning of a verse, र ज स in the
