حوا ḥawwā A (Heb. , from حيّ Heb. To live; "because she was the mother of all living," Gen. iii. 20.) n. prop. Eve, the mother of mankind.

حج ḥajj A (Heb. ) s. m. 1. Act of moving round, or going to a place. 2. Pilgrimage to Mecca.

حکام ḥukkām A s. plur. (of حاکم) Governours, rulers, commanders.

حلقه ḥalḳa A s. m. 1. A ring, a circle, an as- sembly, a fraternity. 2. A kind of firework. 3. A knocker (of a door). حلقه بگوش ḥalḳa- ba-gosh, A slave, a servant: i. e. One who wears a ring in his ear, as a badge of servitude. حلقه بگوشي ḥalḳa ba-gosh-ī, s. f. Servitude, slavery. حلقه زن ḥalḳa-zan, Knocking (at a door).

حاکم ḥākim A (part. act. of حکم q. v.) s. m. A ruler, a governour, a judge, a commander, a master. (Plur. حکام ḥukkām, or Pers. حاکمان ḥākimān). حاکم نشين ḥākim-nishīn, Seat of a ruler or sovereign. A. P. حاکمي ḥākim-ī, s. f. Rule, sway, governance, government, dominion.

حاذق ḥāẕiḳ A (from حذق Was acute, pricked, stimulated) adj. Ingenious, skilful, penetrating, intelligent, excelling, adept.

حمار ḥimār A (Heb. , from حمر To be hot, to be red; because, says Bochart, asses in the east are of this colour: forsan potius a fervore libidinis in hoc animale. Vide Ezech. xxiii. 20.) s. m. An ass.

حدت ḥiddat A s. f. 1. The edge of a sword. 2. Keenness, acuteness, acrimony, passion, ve- hemence, impetuosity, poignancy, virulence.

حشو ḥasho A (from حشا) s. m. 1. Stuffing a pil- low, cushion, bed, &c. also, whatever it may be stuffed with. 2. People of the meanest condition. 3. Small camels. حشومنـﮩ‍ا ḥasho min- hā, 1. Subtraction, deduction. 2. The quantity deducted.

حاوي ḥāwī A (from حوي) part. act. Compre- hending, comprehender.
