افغان afg̠ẖān P 1. s. m. See فغان fig̠ẖān. 2. n. prop. A people, called also Paṭhāns, inha- biting the hilly country to the N. W. of Lāhaur. In their history, they pretend to derive their origin, as well as name, from Afg̠ẖān, whom they account a grandson of Malik Tālūt (king Saul). As to religion, they are Mahometans, notwithstanding the claim they set up to a Jew- ish extraction. (Plur. Arab. افاغنه afāg̠ẖina or Pers. افغانان afg̠ẖānān).
