نانکار nān-kār P. s. m. 1. An allowance of money or land to zamīndārs, ḳānūngos, &c. for sub- sistence. 2. Land granted to servants for their subsistence.

نروان निर्व्वाण nir-wāṇ S (from निर् prep. and r. वा Blow, go) adj. Extinguished, extinct.

نال nāl H 1. Along with, accompanying. سوچ بهي بهري کهري سکهي لکهـ نال کي Soch bhai bharī kharī sakhī lakhi nāl kī, Her accompanying friends, seeing this, were filled with extreme anxiety and terrour. 2. adj. Near. (Panjābī).

نرملتا निर्मलता nirmala-tā S s. f. Pureness, limpidness, pellucidness, cleanness, clearness, transparency.

نجهول ni-jhol S̱. (निर् prep. and r. दुल Throw up) adj. Steady, easy-paced, walking or run- ning smoothly without agitation. (Epithet of an elephant).

نہورنا nahūrnā H (in Braj) v. a. See نہوڙنا ni- hūṛnā.

ندا nidā A s. f. Sound, voice, calling, call to prayer, proclamation, vocative.

ن nūn The twenty-fifth letter of the Arabic and twenty-ninth of the Persian alphabet, corre- sponds to न in Sanskrit. It is one of the dental letters, and has the sound of the English n, with the following exceptions. 1. When it is quiescent in the middle or end of a word, and follows a madda or simple long vowel, it has a very slight nasal sound; as, in زبون Bad, زمان Time, زمين The earth, ماندن To remain: this is called نون غنب nūn-i-g̠ẖunna. If, how- ever, the word at the end of which it occurs be so placed in composition that the ن become moveable by iẓāfat, it ceases to be nasal and resumes its original sound as a dental letter. 2.
