ناگ नाग nāg S s. m. 1. A snake (Coluber naja) and a sort of demigod shaped as a ser- pent. ناگ بهاشا nāg-bhāsh̤ā, A Prākr̤it lan- guage said to be used by the serpentine race who inhabit Pātāl. ناگ پنچمي nāg-pancha- mī, Name of a Hindū holyday, the 5th of Srāwaṇ, sukl-paksh̤, on which day they worship a snake to procure blessings on their children. ناگ پاس (नागपाश) nāg-pās, or ناگ پهانس nāg-phāṅs, s. f. A running noose of a rope, &c. a sort of noose or knot, used in battle to entangle an enemy. ناگ کنيا nāg-kanyā, A race of females said to inhabit Pātāl, or the regions under the earth, and to be of serpentine extraction but very beautiful. ناگ لوک nāg- lok, The region under the earth, the abode of serpents and hydras, Pātāla. ناتهـ नाथ nāth S s. m. 1. A master, a husband, a lord. 2. Often used as an affix to the names of Jogīs; as, گورکهناتهـ gorakh-nāth. 3. s. f. The string in a bullockʼs nose. 4. A seton.

نريٿي nareṭī H s. f. Throat, windpipe. نريٿي دبانا nareṭī dabānā, To throttle.

نل नल nal S s. m. 1. A tube, spout, joint of bamboo or other hollow wood. 2. The bamboo which fowlers use to entangle game by applying birdlime to the top of it. نل چلانا nal-chalānā, Setting the bamboos in motion, denotes a ma- gical practice adopted for the discovery of theft. Two pieces of split bamboo, of equal lengths, are applied to one another side by side, and held by two men, one at each end. It is said that any persons taken at random may be em- ployed for this purpose. Then the magician pronounces certain incantations, the efficacy of which is pretended to be such, that the bam- boos spontaneously move towards the place where the thief or the stolen goods are, and drag the men along with them. نل در نل nal dar nal, One tube within another. 3.
