نايچه nāʼecha P (dimin. of ناي) s. m. A small reed, a ḥuḳḳa snake.

نيل من nīl-maṇi S (नीलमणि) s. m. A gem of a blue colour, a sapphire.

ن nūn The twenty-fifth letter of the Arabic and twenty-ninth of the Persian alphabet, corre- sponds to न in Sanskrit. It is one of the dental letters, and has the sound of the English n, with the following exceptions. 1. When it is quiescent in the middle or end of a word, and follows a madda or simple long vowel, it has a very slight nasal sound; as, in زبون Bad, زمان Time, زمين The earth, ماندن To remain: this is called نون غنب nūn-i-g̠ẖunna. If, how- ever, the word at the end of which it occurs be so placed in composition that the ن become moveable by iẓāfat, it ceases to be nasal and resumes its original sound as a dental letter. 2. When it precedes ب or پ it has the sound of m; as, in منبر mimbar, A pulpit; سنپت

نلاهٿ nilāhaṭ S̱. (from नील) s. f. Blueness.

نہٿا nuh-aṭṭā S̱. (from नख Nail, and perhaps हत or आघात from r. हन Strike) s. m. A scratch with the nail or talon.

نہرانا nihurānā H or نہڙانا nihuṛānā (causal of نہرنا, &c.) v. a. To cause to crook, to bend, to bow.

نواح nawāḥ A (contract. for نواحي plur. of ناحيه from نحو) s. f. Environs, district, tract, coast, shore. ¶ nuwāḥ (from نوح) s. m. Act of la- menting, bewailing, complaining.

نقاري naḳār-ī A. s. m. One who beats the kettle- drum.

نيک nek P adj. 1. Good, lucky. 2. (subst.) Any thing good. نيک اختر nek-aḵẖtar, For- tunate. نيک اعتقادي nek-iﻌtikād-ī, s. f. Goodness of trust or reliance, good faith. نيک انديش nek-andesh, Meaning well, well disposed. نيک انديشي nek-andesh-ī, s. f. Good intention. نيک باز nek-bāz, Just, virtuous, of good actions. نيکبخت nek-baḵẖt, Fortunate (commonly meaning, of good dispositions). نيکبختي nek-baḵẖt-ī, s. f. Virtue, good fortune. نيک پاک nek-pāk, Virtuous. نيک تدبير nek-tadbīr, Good in counsel or management. نيک تن nek-tan, Sleek-skinned

نرچا nirchā H s. m. A kind of greens. (Cor- chorus capsularis).
