لال lāl S̱. 1. (r. लल Wish for, or लड Sport) adj. Darling, dear; s. m. An infant boy, a son. 2. (लाला) s. m. Spittle, saliva. 3. s. m. The name of a bird. (The male of Frin- gilla amandava). لال بجهکڙ lāl bujhakkaṛ, An intelligent person; one who comprehends quickly, or who readily divines what has happened or is to happen from certain symptoms; but, the term is generally used ironically for a wise- acre, an ignorant foolish person who pretends to more sense than his neighbours; as, in the following answer given by a person of this de- scription, when consulted respecting the marks of an elephantʼs feet in mire, by people who had never seen such an animal: يـﮩ توبوجهي لال بجهکڙ اورنه بوجهي کوي پاين چکي باندهکرمت هرنا کوداهوي Yih to būjhe lāl bujhakkaṛ aur na būjhe koʼe; pāyan chakkī bāndhkar mat harnā kūdā hoʼe. Lāl Bujhakkaṛ and none else can understand this; may not an antelope with a millstone tied to his feet have bounded here?

لوکهـ lūkh उल्का S̱. s. f. A flame. لوکهـ چلانا lūkh chalānā, To charm, to fascinate.

لڙهنا luṛhnā S̱. (लुठन or लोठन r. लुठ Roll about) v. n. To roll, to be spilt. لڙه جانا luṛh jānā, To die.

لولو lūlū A s. m. A pearl. (Plur. لالي laʼālī).

لـﮩاب luhāb A (from لـﮩب Heb. ) s. m. Blazing, flame without smoke, burning.

لوٿنا lauṭnā H v. n. 1. To turn over. 2. To turn back, to return.

لي lai लय S̱. s. f. 1. Equal time in musick and dancing, tone, melody, modulation, sym- phony, singing in tune. 2. Ardent affection or desire, immersion, absorption.

ليل lail A s. f. Night. ليل ونـﮩار lail-o-nahār, Day and night; a sort of wood (Qanoon-e-islam).

لازم lāzim A (part. act. of لزم) adj. Insepa- rably belonging or adhering (to), incumbent (on), necessary, requisite, ur- gent, suitable, proper, important, inseparable, indispensable. لازم ملزوم lāzim malzūm, Inti- mate friendship.

لکٿ lakuṭ लगुड S̱. s. m. A staff, a stick, club.
