گوڙيا gauṛiyā
گوڙيا gauṛiyā S̱. s. m. Inhabitant of Gauṛ; hence, the followers of Chaitanya of Nadiyā are so called. This philosopher flourished about the year 1407 of Sālivāhana. He was by birth a Brāhmaṇ; and, having become a Sannyāsī, maintained that the doctrines of the Vedas had been hitherto misunderstood, and explained them in a manner peculiar to himself. His sect is a branch of the Vaish̤ṇava or worshippers of Vish̤ṇu. His disciples in various parts of India are said to amount to five millions. His fol- lowers believe him to have been an incarnation of the deity.
