علت iﻌllat A (from علّ Heb. To attempt, to cause) s. f. 1. Disease, defect. 2. Cause, pre- tence, pretext. 3. Filth, dirt. (Plur. علل iﻌlal). حرف علت ḥarf-i-iﻌllat, The interchangeable letter و,ا or ي. Every material substance is said to have four causes: علت صوري iﻌllat-i-ṣūrī, Formal cause, i. e. that form in which its es- sence consists: علت غاٴي iﻌllat-i-g̠ẖāʼī, Final cause, or purpose for which it was made. علت فاعلي iﻌllat-i-fāʼiﻌlī, Efficient cause (as the maker, if the work of man): علت مادي iﻌllat-i-māddī, Material cause, or the matter of which the thing is made.

عقده uﻌḳda A (from عقد) s. m. 1. A knot, an ex- crescence (especially, at the joints, or where bones have been broken), a node. 2. An impe- diment in speech. 3. Perplexed affairs, en- tangled things, confused words. عقده کشا uﻌḳda- kushā, Resolver of perplexities or difficulties. عقده کساٴي uﻌḳda-kushā-ī, s. f. The untying or opening of knots or difficulties.

عيوب uﻌyūb A plur. (of عيب) Vices, defects, &c.

عامي āﻌmī A (part. act. of عمي) adj. Blind, ig- norant.

عمامه iﻌmāma A or aﻌmāma, s. m. A turband, a tiara.

عبارت iﻌbārat A (from عبر) s. f. Style, mode of expression or of explanation (in language), phrase, phraseology, a trope or figure, signifi- cation, import, meaning. (Plur. عبارات).

عمود aﻌmūd A s. m. A perpendicular (in geome- try). عمود صبح aﻌmūd-i-ṣubḥ, The morning rays or refulgence.

عظيم aﻌz̤īm A (from عظم) adj. Great, high in dig- nity, large. عظيم الشان aﻌz̤īmu-sh-shān, adj. Of high station or dignity, magnificent.

عشر uﻌshr A s. m. A tenth part.

عاذر āﻌẕir A part. act. (of عذر) 1. Making ex- cuses. 2. s. m. An apologist. 3. The scar of a wound.
