عبارت iﻌbārat A (from عبر) s. f. Style, mode of expression or of explanation (in language), phrase, phraseology, a trope or figure, signifi- cation, import, meaning. (Plur. عبارات).

عبث aﻌbas̤ A 1. adj. Vain, idle, absurd, trifling, profitless. 2. adv. In vain, idly, absurdly, uselessly. 3. subst. Vanity, absurdity.

ع aﻌin called عين مـﮩمله or عين غير منقوطه the eighteenth letter of the Arabic alphabet, does not occur in pure Persian, and has no analagous character in Sanskrit. It is one of the guttural letters, being formed in the lower part of the throat, by a compression of the fauces stronger and deeper than that used in the formation of hamza. Its sound has been compared to the voice of a calf calling its mother, or to that of a person who is making some painful exertion. It is one of the radical letters. In the denota- tion of numbers by the Arabic letters, it stands for 70. In Persian words introduced into Ara- bic it is substituted for ا as لعل for لال.

Time, season, conjuncture. عـﮩد شکن aﻌhd-shikan, Promise-break- er, faithless to oneʼs word or engagement. عـﮩد شکني aﻌhd-shikan-ī, s. f. Promise-breaking, breach of faith. عـﮩد کرنا aﻌhd karnā, To pro- mise, to vow. عـﮩد و پيمان کرنا aﻌhd o paimān karnā, To covenant, to bargain. عـﮩد نامه aﻌhd- nāma, A contract, an agreement in writing, char- ter, articles of peace, &c.

عقيم aﻌḳīm A (from عقم) adj. m. Barren, having no children.
