شعبه shuʼba A s. m. The cleft or crack of a moun- tain in which water stands, a channel in which water flows especially through the sand.

شارح shāriḥ A (part. act. from شرح) s. Com- mentator, annotator, expositor.

شرمسار sharm-sār P adj. Abashed, ashamed.

شانه shāna P s. m. 1. A comb. 2. The shoulder. شانه سر shāna-sar, Name of a bird, the hoopoe or hudhud.

شميانه shamiyāna P. s. m. A canopy, an awning.

شاد ماني shād-mān-ī P s. f. Pleasure, delight, joy, rejoicing, gayety, gladness.

شوخ shoḵẖ P adj. Mischievous, playful, pert, saucy, brisk, cheerful, buxom, sly, humorous, wanton, strong, insolent, presumptuous. شوخ چشم shoḵẖ-chashm, adj. Wanton-eyed, having a playful eye, unceremonious. شوخ چشمي shoḵẖ-chashm-ī, s. f. Wantonness or playfulness of the eye.

شام shām P 1. s. f. Evening. 2. (a) s. m. Sy- ria. شام کي مرديکوکب تک روٴيي shām ke murde ko kab tak roʼiye, is applied to express a circumstance which is likely to be a subject of regret for life. (The expression is taken from the custom, among the relations of a dead per- son, of venting loud lamentations while the corpse remains in the house. If the death hap- pens in the morning, the body is soon removed; but, if towards evening, it remains till next morning; in which case the mourners are apt to be overtaken by sleep).

ش shīn called شين معجمه or شين منقوطه is the thirteenth letter of the Arabic and sixteenth of the Persian alphabet, corresponding nearly to श in Sanskrit. Its sound is that of the English sh; of the French ch, as in cheval; and, of the Italian sc, as in scimia. In denoting numbers by the letters of the Arabic alphabet, it stands for 300. It is used as an abbreviation for the word شمال North; and, in dates of letters, &c. for the month شعبان. In Persian it may be used, 1. To mark the pro- noun of the third person singular, in the genitive or accusative case; as, نامش His name, ثنايش His praise, گفتمش for گفتم اورا I said to him: and, it is frequently disjoined from the noun to which it has reference; as in this line of G̱ẖanīmat, زحيرتہا خرد گرديد آبش His under- standing was turned to water by astonishment, for ازحيرتہا خردش آب شد. If, moreover, it relates to the same person as the agent of the sentence, it stands for the reciprocal pronoun خود; as نہد خورهرطرف دامي زتارش کزان روپرتوي گردد شکارش The sun spreads in every direction a net made of his rays; that, by means thereof he may catch a reflected image. 2.
