سورات siva-rāt S or siva-rātra or siva-rātri (for शिवरात्रि) s. f. A festival held on the four- teenth of the dark fortnight in the month of Phālguna (February-March) in honour of the birth of the linga or phallus.

سينہہ sīṅh H s. m. A hedge-hog.

سکان sukkān A (from سکن Heb. To rest, to stop, to inhabit) s. m. 1. A rudder, helm. 2. (Plur. of ساکن) Inhabitants.

سيد saiyid A (verbal adj. from سود) s. m. 1. A lord, a prince. 2. A descendant of Ḥusain, who was the grandson of the prophet Muḥammad. سيد الانام saiyidu-l-anām (the prince of men and of all living creatures), سيد البشر saiyidu-l-bashar (the prince of mortals), سيد المرسلين يا انبيا saiyidu-l-mursalīn or -ambiyā (the head of the apostles, or prophets) are epithets of Muḥammad.

سارو sāro P s. f. Name of a bird, a starling.

سٿکن suṭkun H s. f. A rod.

سير ser सेटक S̱. s. m. Name of a weight. (The Calcutta factory ser weighs 1 lb. 13 oz. 13.86 drs. avoir. and the bāzār ser 2lb. 0 oz. 13.853 drs.).

ساجهي sājhī सहाय S̱. s. m. A partner, as- sociate.

سدهانا sudhānā S̱. (from سدهہ sudh) v. a. To put in mind, to cause to remember. S. سدهانت सिद्धान्त (comp. of सिद्ध Accom- plished, and अंत End) siddhānt, s. m. 1. Result, consequence, truth established by de- monstration. 2. A system of science.

سہاون suhāwan शोभन S̱. adj. Agreeable, pleasant, charming.
