داها dāhā P. (from ده Ten) s. m. The ten days of the muḥarram, in which the tombs of Hasan and Husain are carried about and thrown into the river or other water. See دها dahā.

دري darī P s. f. 1. A small carpet. 2. A dialect of the Persian language, the origin and pecu- liarities of which are variously defined by Persian lexicographers. Some alledge its distinctive mark to be when the form of the word is com- plete, without contraction; as bugo, ishkam, Darī; go and shikam, Pārsī. Others make it the dialect of a certain district, comprehending Balkh, Bukhārā, Badakhshān, Marū-Shāh-Jān, and Bāmiyān. The name is by some said to be derived from dara, a valley among hills; which corresponds with its origin in Badakh- shān and the mountainous part of Kandhār. Others assert that it was spoken at the court of the monarchs of the Kaiānian dynasty, and derive the name from dar a gate or dargāh a

درپيش dar-pesh P adv. In front, before. درپيش هونا dar-pesh honā, To be in front or before, to be in hand, to be on foot, to occur or happen, to be on the carpet or anvil, to be incumbent or neces- sary. درپيش لانا dar-pesh lānā, To adduce.

دهرني धरणी dharṇī S s. f. The earth. دهرني دهر धरणीधर dharṇī-dhar, s. m. 1. A moun- tain. 2. n. prop. Name of Shesh̤-nāg, a ser- pent, who upholds the earth: and of Vish̤ṇu in the form of a tortoise and of a boar.

درهم dar-ham P adj. Confused, confounded, an- gry, higgledy-piggledy. درهم برهم dar-ham bar- ham, adj. Confused. درهم برهم کرنا darham barham karnā, To confuse, confound, jumble.

دور daur A (Heb. ) s. m. 1. Revolution (of time or of any body), passing round (of wine), circular motion. 2. A species of argument, reasoning in a circle. 3. Age, period, cycle, tour, turn, time, vicissitude, circuit. دوردور daur daur, s. m. Prosperity. دورگردي daur- gard-ī, s. f. Revolution, changing.

دهوريا بيلا dhūriyā-belā H s. m. A species of jas- mine.

دماغ dimāg̠ẖ A s. m. 1. The brain. دماغ تازه کرنا dimāg̠ẖ tāza karnā, To be pleased. 2. (in Persian, also, damāg̠ẖ) Pride, haughtiness, conceit, spirit, fancy. دماغ چڙهنا damāg̠ẖ chaṛhnā, To be proud with excess of wealth. دماغ کرنا damāg̠ẖ karnā, To be vain, proud, haughty; or rather, to act proudly, &c. دماغ هونا damāg̠ẖ honā, To be vain, haughty, proud. P. دماغي 1. dimāg̠ẖ-ī, adj. Of the brain. 2. da- māg̠ẖ-ī, Vain, frivolous, conceited, proud.

د dāl called دال مـﮩمله or غيرمعجمه is the eighth letter of the Arabic, and the tenth of the Persian alphabet. In the representation of Hindī words by the letters of these alphabets, it denotes the Nāgarī द (da); or, with ه (he) subjoined, ध (dha). In the numerical application of the Arabic al- phabet, د (dāl) stands for four; hence, in al- manacks, it represents the fourth day of the week, Wednesday: it is, moreover, used in astronomy to denote the planet Mercury, or the sign Leo of the Zodiack. This letter, in Persian, may be changed to ت (te); as, in بتر for بدتر Worse: or, when the next preceding letter is ,و,ا, or ي, or is moveable by a short vowel, it may be converted to ذ (ẕāl); as استاذ for استاد A master, گنبذ for گنبد A dome: (see Lumsdenʼs Persian Gram. p. 24). And, in Arabic words of the measure افتعال, when ,ذ,د or ز is the first letter of the root, د (dāl) is substituted for the servile ت (te); as, in ازدحام from زحم.
