حجاز ḥijāz A (from حجز To restrain, to intervene, to separate) s. m. 1. Mecca and the adjacent country, Arabia Petræa. (Arabia is by some divided into two parts only; viz. Yaman and Ḥijāz: others make of it five divisions; namely, Yaman, Tihāma, Najd, Aﻌrūẓ and Ḥijāz. Ḥijāz is the chain of mountains extending from Yaman to Syria; and has this name from intervening between Najd and Tihāma). 2. Name of one of the three principal Persian modes of musick (the other two being اسفـﮩان isfahān and عراق iﻌrāḳ).
