حکايت ḥikāyat A (from حکو or حکي To nar- rate, Heb. The palate; speech) s. f. A history, romance, story, tale, narration.

حشاشه ḥushāsha A (from حشّ) s. m. The remains of life, last breathings of a dying man.

حالت ḥālat A s. f. 1. State, condition, cir- cumstance, posture of oneʼs affairs. 2. Case. (Plur. حالات ḥālāt).

حافظ ḥāfiz̤ A (from حفظ) s. m. 1. A guardian, governour, preserver. 2. Having a good me- mory. 3. One who has the whole ḳurʼān by heart. 4. The poetical name of a celebrated poet of Persia (Muhammad Shamsuddīn).

حکيم ḥakīm A (from حکمت) adj. used substan- tively, A sage, a philosopher, a physician. A. P. حکيمانه ḥakīm-āna, adj. Physician-like, sage-like, philosophical.

حمايل ḥamāʼịl A (from حمل) s. f. 1. A sword- belt hung from the shoulders. 2. A necklace of flowers. 3. A small ḳurʼān suspended to the neck as an amulet.

حمر ḥumr A adj. Red. (Heb. ).

حلال ḥalāl A (from حل) adj. 1. Legal, allow- able, lawful, right. 2. (A woman) laying aside mourning for the death of her husband, at the expiration of 100 days (during which time she is not by law allowed to marry). حلال خور ḥalāl-ḵẖor, s. m. A person of the lowest cast, generally a sweeper, or employed

حميد ḥamīd A m. (from حمد) adj. 1. Praised. 2. Laudable, glorious. اخلاق حميده aḵẖlāḳ-i-ḥamīda, Laudable quali- ties or manners. اوصاف حميده auṣāf-i-ḥamīda, Laudable qualifications.

حمام ḥammām A (from حمّ Heb. To become warm) s. m. A hot bath, bagnio. ¶ ḥamām, s. A pigeon.
