حجاز ḥijāz : حجاز ḥijāz A (from حجز To restrain, to intervene, to separate) s. m. 1. Mecca and the adjacent country, Arabia Petræa. (Arabia is by some divided into two parts only; viz. Yaman and Ḥijāz: others make of it five divisions; namely, Yaman, Tihāma, Najd, Aﻌrūẓ and Ḥijāz. Ḥijāz is the chain of mountains extending from Yaman to Syria; and has this name from intervening between Najd and Tihāma). 2.
