آبستان ābistān P adj. Pregnant, with young.

آتا ātā H s. m. A custard apple: see آت āt.

آتشستان ātash-istān P s. f. The region of fire, a place where fire abounds; (hence the word is applied to) a hot fire of cannon or small arms in battle; a large fire, a funeral pile.

آرتا ārtā आरात्रिक S̱. s. m. A ceremony attending marriage. When the bridegroom first comes to the house of the bride, he is received by her relations, who present to him, and move circularly round his head, a platter painted and divided into several compartments; in the middle of which is a lamp made of flour, filled with ghī and having several wicks lighted.

آستان āstān P (Sans. स्थान Place, r. ष्ठा Stand) s. m. A threshold, a fakīrʼs residence. آستان بوسي āstān-bos-ī, s. f. Kissing the threshold; paying respects. ستان stān, or استان istān (in compos. signifies) Place.

آستانه āstāna P s. m. Same as آستان q. v. آستانه بوسي āstāna-bos-ī, s. f. Kissing the threshold; paying respects.

آستین āstīn P s. f. A sleeve. آستین کا سانپ āstīn kā sāmp, A domestick enemy, an enemy who wears the mask of friendship.

آسمنتات आसमन्तात् आ, सम् and अन्त End āsamantāt S. adv. All around, on every side; wholly, altogether.

آشتي āshtī P s. f. 1. Peace, concord, reconciliation, accommodation, agreement, conven- tion, confederacy. 2. Amour, intrigue.

آفتاب āftāb P s. m. The sun, sunshine. آفتاب پرست āftāb-parast, A worshipper of the sun. آفتاب پرستي āftāb-parast-ī, s. f. Worship of the sun. آفتاب گیر āftāb-gīr, A parasol, an umbrella.

آفتابه āftāba P s. m. An ewer.

آفتابي āftāb-ī P 1. adj. Of the sun, solar, faded by the sun, yellow. 2. s. f. A parasol of a par- ticular form, a target studded with gold.

آفتاوا āftāwā P s. m. An ewer. See آفتابه.

آواتي āwātī S̱. (from آنا To come, q. v.) s. f. Ap- proach, advance; the coming of an army, the approach of a friend; the season in which mer- chandise is expected.
