ابریشم abresham P or ābresham, s. m. Silk, sewing silk, raw silk.

بشم bisham S (विषम) adj. Unequalled (in a bad sense), difficult, bad, afflictive. بشمجر bi- sham-jar (or bish̤am-jwar, विषमज्वर) s. m. An inflammatory fever, a high fever.

حشم ḥasham A s. m. Train, equipage, suite.

شماتت shamātat A s. f. Rejoicing at the dis- tress of another.

شمال shamāl A or shimāl (Heb. from شمل Heb. To comprehend, surround, encircle) s. m. 1. The north. 2. The north wind. 3. The left hand (see under داهنا dāhinā). شمال رو shimāl-rū, Facing the north. شمال نما shimāl- numā, A marinerʼs compass.

شمايل shamāʼịl A s. plur. (of شمال) Dispositions, qualities, virtues, customs.

شمس shams A (Heb. and Chald. from To minister or serve; which the sun does in giving light to the universe: Buxt.) s. m. The sun.

شمسه shamsa A s. m. Little tassels affixed to a rosary.

شمسي shams-ī A adj. Solar. شمسي قمري shams-ī ḳamar-ī, adj. (solar and lunar) 1. A perquisite taken by the officers of government, being the difference between the pay for a lunar and solar month. 2. A monthly period of three or four days, during which the female attendants in the womenʼs apartments have leave of absence.

شمشاد shamshād P s. m. 1. The box-tree. (Me- ninski). 2. (met.) applied to the form of a mistress.

شمشير shamsher P s. f. A scimitar, sword. شمشير بہادر shamsher-bahādur, (ironically) A useless, worthless fellow. شمشيرزن shamsher-zan, A swordman. شمشيرزني shamsher-zan-ī, s. f. Swordmanship, use of the sword.

شمع shamﻌ A s. f. 1. A lamp, a candle. 2. Wax. شمعدان shamﻌ-dān, s. m. A candlestick. شمع ساز shamﻌ-sāz, A chandler, a candle-maker. شمع رخ shamﻌ-ruḵẖ, Red-cheeked. شمع رو shamﻌ-rū, Having a countenance resplendent as the candle. A.P. شمعي رنگ sham-īﻌ rang, Flame-colour.

شمله shamla A (Heb. from شمل Heb. To surround) s. m. 1. The worked or embroi- dered end of a turband or kamar-band, some- times tucked into the folds, and sometimes left flying loose. 2. A narrow kind of shawl for tying round the waist or the head.

شمن shaman P s. An idol-worshipper, an idola- ter.
