غ g̠ẖain called غين معجمه or غين منقوطه the nineteenth letter of the Arabic and twenty-second of the Persian alphabet, has no corre- sponding character in Sanskrit. It is one of the guttural letters; its sound being like that of the Northumberland r, or like a g uttered with compression deeply in the throat: and, it has

غيب g̠ẖaib A (from غيب Heb. and Chald. To be hidden or concealed) adj. Latent, concealed, absent, invisible, mysterious. sub. In visibility, mystery, absence, or for عالم غيب aﻌlam-i-g̠ẖaib, The invisible world, the other world. غيب دان g̠ẖaib-dān, Skilled in disco- vering mysteries, a seer, diviner, omniscient.

غيباني g̠ẖaibānī A. s. f. A shameless woman, a strumpet.

غيبت g̠ẖaibat A s. f. Absence. ¶ g̠ẖībat, Speaking ill of any one behind his back, backbiting, slander, detraction. غيبت کرني g̠ẖībat karnī, To backbite.

غيبي g̠ẖaib-ī A adj. Absent, invisible, of the in- visible world, heavenly, divine.

غير g̠ẖair A 1. adj. Other, different. 2. Foreign, strange; (sub.) a stranger. 3. adv. Besides, without, except, different from, the reverse of. غير از g̠ẖair az, Besides, other than. غير حاضر g̠ẖair-ḥāẓir, Absent, away. غير حاضري g̠ẖair- ḥāẓir-ī, s. f. Absence, non-appearance, non-at- tendance. غير ذالک g̠ẖair-ẕālik, Besides this, besides. غير شر عي g̠ẖair-shar-īﻌ, adj. Contrary to the sharﻌ, unlawful. غير متر قب g̠ẖair-mu- taraḳḳab, mas. or غير متر قبه g̠ẖair-mutaraḳḳaba, fem. Unexpected. غير معين g̠ẖair-muʼaﻌiyan, Unstable, unsettled, vague.

غيرت g̠ẖairat A s. f. 1. Modesty, bashfulness, honour, courage. 2. Jealousy, enmity, emula- tion, a nice sense of honour. غيرت افزا g̠ẖairat- afzā, Increasing emulation or jealousy. غيرت کش g̠ẖairat-kash, adj. Enduring jealousy, jealous. غيرتمند g̠ẖairat-mand, Jealous, emu- lous, high-minded.

غيريت g̠ẖairīyat A s. f. Strangeness, jealousy.

متغير mutag̠ẖaiyir A (part. act. V. from غير) adj. Changed, inconsistent, disturbed, stupified, per- plexed.

مغيب mug̠ẖaiyab A (part. pass. II. of غيب Heb. and Chald. ) adj. Concealed, hidden.

مغير mug̠ẖaiyar A (part. pass. II. of غير Heb. ) adj. Changed, altered.

مغيلان mug̠ẖailān P s. Name of a tree, called in Hindī ببول babūl and کيکڙ kīkaṛ, q. v. and in Arab. ام غيلان ummu g̠ẖailān, a species of Mi- mosa, or the acacia tree.
