آبستان ābistān P adj. Pregnant, with young.

آتشستان ātash-istān P s. f. The region of fire, a place where fire abounds; (hence the word is applied to) a hot fire of cannon or small arms in battle; a large fire, a funeral pile.

آستان āstān P (Sans. स्थान Place, r. ष्ठा Stand) s. m. A threshold, a fakīrʼs residence. آستان بوسي āstān-bos-ī, s. f. Kissing the threshold; paying respects. ستان stān, or استان istān (in compos. signifies) Place.

آستانه āstāna P s. m. Same as آستان q. v. آستانه بوسي āstāna-bos-ī, s. f. Kissing the threshold; paying respects.

استا ustā H (perhaps for استاد) s. m. A barber.

استاد istād P s. f. The act of standing. ¶ part. (for استاده) Standing, raised up.

استاد ustād A s. m. A master (in any art), an adept, teacher, preceptor, artist.

استاده istāda P part. Standing, set up, erected, erect; (hence, sub.) A pole, ensign-staff, prop, &c. particularly, a prop for supporting the door of a tent, and not the tent pole.

استادي ustād-ī P s. f. Teaching, instruction, mastership, skilfulness, skill, art. ¶ adj. Mas- terly (as workmanship, &c.).

استادگي istāda-gī P s. f. Standing, stand, erec- tion, firmness, resistance.

استبداد istibdād A (inf. x. of بدّ) s. m. Absolute dominion, despotism, insisting upon a thingʼs being done.

استبرا istibrā A (inf. x. of برأ) s. m. 1. Cleansing, washing oneʼs hands of a business or desiring to be freed from it. 2. The waiting of a woman after being divorced from her husband, to as certain whether she is pregnant or not, before she can contract another marriage. (The term is three months, according to the Muhammadan law).
