اوٿ پٿانگ ūṭ-paṭāng H s. m. Absurdity, non- sense, what is without meaning or foundation. adj. Poor, helpless, destitute, in disorder.

اپلي uplī H s. f. Cakes of cow-dung of a smaller size than اپلا uplā.

آتش زن ātash-zan P Striking fire; a striker of fire.

اساول isāwal T s. m. A poursuivant. S. آساونت आशावन्तः (from आशा Hope) āsā- want, adj. Expectant, dependant. S̱. اساونت (अ and ساونت Brave) a-sāwant, adj. Fearful, unquiet, pitiful.

اسمین a-samaiṅ S̱. adv. Out of season. S. آسن आसन (r. आस Sit) āsan, s. m. 1. A stool, a seat, a small carpet on which the Hindūs sit at prayer, a carpet to sit on. 2. Stay, abiding, posture, attitude, sitting (espe- cially, the attitudes adopted by jogīs in their devotional exercises, of which they enumerate eighty-four). 3. The inside or under part of the thigh. 4. The withers of an elephant, the part where the driver sits. آسن تلي آنا āsan tale ānā, To come under subjection. آسن حوڙنا āsan joṛnā, To sit on the hams. آسن ڐولنا āsan ḍolnā, Spoken of a holy man, who perceiving by supernatural intelligence that some one in distress has called on him, interposes in his behalf. آسن سي آسن جوڙنا āsan se āsan joṛnā, To sit close in contact with another person. آسن لگانا āsan lagānā, To sit obstinately in a given posture till oneʼs request be obtained. آسن مارنا

اذکیا aẕkiyā A s. plur. (of ذکي ẕakī) People of discernment, the acute, the ingenious.

العظمت لله al-aﻌz̤amatu lillāhi A Great is God! (an ejaculation expressive of surprise, fear, de- nial, &c.).

آواز āwāz P s. f. Voice, sound, report, fame, echo, a whisper, sentence. آوازاٿهانا āwāz uṭhānā, To raise the voice, to spread a report. آوازپڙنا āwāz paṛnā, 1. To be reported. 2. The voice to be suppressed (from hoarseness or otherwise).

اٿیر aṭer H s. f. Name of a town.

اولا olā S̱. (ओल adj. Wet) s. m. 1. Hail. 2. The name of a kind of sweetmeat. اولاهوجانا olā hojānā, To become cold. جون سرمنڐاياتون اولي پڙي joṅ sir munḍāyā toṅ ole paṛe, I had no sooner shaved my head than a shower of hail came on. (Spoken of one who has just en- gaged in an enterprise which turns out unfortu- nate).
