صمداني ṣamdān-ī A adj. Divine.

صندلي ṣandal-ī A. 1. adj. Of the colour of sandal wood; brown, sorrel. 2. Made of sandal wood. 3. s. f. A kind of chair. 4. s. m. A sort of eu- nuch.

صفر ṣafar A or ṣafaru-l-muz̤affar, s. m. The se- cond month of the Muhammadan year. (On the 20th day of this month is held the festival of Sarotan, in commemoration of the junction of the head and body of Ḥusain. The 28th and the last days of this month are reckoned unfortunate; the former on account of Ḥasanʼs being poisoned by his wife; the latter because destructive vegetables are supposed to be pro- duced on that day). ¶ ṣifr, s. m. صہبا ṣahbā A s. Wine, especially red wine.

صاعقه ṣāʼiﻌḳa A (from صعق Heb. and Chal. To call aloud, make a noise, thunder, strike with lightning) s. Lightning, a thunderbolt.

صوم ṣaum A (Heb. ) 1. s. m. Fasting, a fast. 2. One who fasts. 3. A christian church. 4. adj. Silent. صوم صلوة ṣaum ṣalāt, s. f. Fasting and prayer.

صفي ṣafī A (from صفو) adj. 1. Pure. 2. Just. 3. n. prop. The name of a Persian dynasty that
