شام shām P 1. s. f. Evening. 2. (a) s. m. Sy- ria. شام کي مرديکوکب تک روٴيي shām ke murde ko kab tak roʼiye, is applied to express a circumstance which is likely to be a subject of regret for life. (The expression is taken from the custom, among the relations of a dead per- son, of venting loud lamentations while the corpse remains in the house. If the death hap- pens in the morning, the body is soon removed; but, if towards evening, it remains till next morning; in which case the mourners are apt to be overtaken by sleep).

See سبد sabd. شبد شاستر शब्दशास्त्र shabd- shāstr, Etymology, the science of grammatical inflection. شبد بيدهي shabd-bedhī (शब्दवेधी Piercing by sound) One who has the skill of shooting an arrow, &c. upon an unseen person, on hearing a sound made by him: (an arrow) that pierces by sound, or that hits what is merely heard.
