شحناٴي shaḥnā-ī A. s. f. Superintendence.

شکن शकुन shakun S s. m. Any lucky or auspi- cious object or omen. See شگون. A.H. شکنا shak-nā, v. n. (dakh.) To doubt.

شريعت sharīʼaﻌt A (from شرع) s. f. 1. The laws of Muḥammad. 2. Law, justice, equity.

شامل shāmil A (part. act. of شمل) 1. adj. Ex- tending to, or surrounding in every part, com- prising, including, included, blended, united, confederated, communicating, common, univer- sal. 2. adv. Together. 3. prep. With, along with. شاملحال shāmil-ḥāl or shāmil-i-ḥāl, Con- nected from circumstances, of similar circum- stances, comprising circumstances; general. شامل کرنا shāmil karnā, To blend. شامل هونا shāmil honā, To be blended, to be comprised, to partake, to participate, to comprise, to in- clude.

شکني shikan-ī P (in compos.) s. f. Breaking, de- feat.

شيرني shernī P. s. f. A lioness or tigress.

شام shām P 1. s. f. Evening. 2. (a) s. m. Sy- ria. شام کي مرديکوکب تک روٴيي shām ke murde ko kab tak roʼiye, is applied to express a circumstance which is likely to be a subject of regret for life. (The expression is taken from the custom, among the relations of a dead per- son, of venting loud lamentations while the corpse remains in the house. If the death hap- pens in the morning, the body is soon removed; but, if towards evening, it remains till next morning; in which case the mourners are apt to be overtaken by sleep).

شتاه shattāh A. adj. perhaps for شطاح shaṭṭāḥ, q. v.
