روڙهـ रूढ rūṛh S adj. Hard, stiff, rough, grim, cross.

راجس rājas रजस् S̱. s. m. Passion or love of sensual enjoyment or pleasure, &c. See رج raj, sign. 3.

روا rawā H s. m. 1. Gold or silver filings. 2. A grain or particle of sand, dust, gunpowder, &c.

ريا riyā A (from رأي To see) s. m. Hypocrisy, dissimulation, subterfuge, evasion, affectation. ريا کار riyā-kār, Hypocrite, dissembler.

ريندهنا rīndhnā S̱. (रंधन r. रध Ripen) v. a. To dress (victuals), to cook.

رتي ratī S̱. 1. (रति) n. prop. The Venus of the Hindūs, and the wife of Kāmadeva (Cupid), who was consumed by the fiery rage of Ma- hādeva for interrupting him in his devotions; and, Rati, being disconsolate for the loss of her husband, was informed by Pārvatī that he would be born in the house of Kr̤ish̤ṇa, and would have the name of Pradyumna; but, that Rājā Sambara would steal him away and cast him into the sea; that, thence, he would be taken in the belly of a fish to the kitchen of Sambara; and, that she must go and wait for him there. Following this advice, she remained in the kitchen of that Rājā, till it happened that a large fish, which had been presented to him, on being opened by the cook, was found to contain another fish; and, when this was opened, a child issued from its belly. This child the cook gave to Rati: and the matter being reported to the Rājā, he directed her to take care of the child and to rear it. When Kāmadeva was grown up, she made him ac- quainted with what Pārvatī had told her; and advised him to kill Sambara, and to return with her to the house of Kr̤ish̤ṇa and Rukmiṇī, where he was born. This was accomplished: and, Rati was married to him on his return to his parents. Hence Rati is considered as both mother and wife of Kāmadeva. 2. also rattī, s. f. Fortune. رتي چمکني ratī (or rattī) cha- maknī, To begin to prosper, to flourish. 3.

راسخ rāsiḵẖ A (part. act. of رسوخ) adj. Firm, durable, constant, rooted, sincere, learned.

رام چندر रामचन्द्र Rāma-chandra S n. prop. Son of Dasaratha, and conqueror of Lankā or Ceylon. He was the seventh avatār; when the deity descended for the purpose of destroying Rāvaṇa, who, having obtained (for his devo- tion) a promise from Brahmā that he should not suffer death by any of the usual means, was become the tyrant and pest of mankind. The Devatās came in the shape of monkeys, as Rāvaṇa had gained no promise of safety from them; hence, Hanumāna was Rāmaʼs general. Rāmachandraʼs motherʼs name was Kausalyā. His younger brother Bharata was son of Ke- kayī, who was the cause of Rāmaʼs going to the desert to perform devotions, on the banks of the Pampā nadī, insisting that her son should reign the fourteen years that Rāma em- ployed in the devotion. It was while performing his devotion (or during his stay in the fo- rests) in company with Laksh̤maṇa (his brother by Sumitrā) that, while he was absent hunting, Rāvaṇa appeared as a beggar, and enticed away Sītā; which gave rise to the war detailed in the Rāmāyaṇa. Sītā was daughter of Rājā Janaka, who had promised to give her to any person who could break a certain bow; which
