دهرن dharan S̱. s. f. 1. (धरण) A beam. 2. Accent, tone. 3. The navel (or rather the um- bilical vein, perhaps the aorta or cœliack artery, as it is said to pulsate) which is supposed by the Hindū physicians to be occasionally re- moved from its place, and thus to occasion various morbid symptoms. This is called دهرن ڐگني dharan-ḍignī or ناف ٿلنا يا اکهڙنا nāf- ṭalnā or -ukhaṛnā, and the cure is attempted by friction of the belly. 4. See دهرنا dharnā.

دمچي dum-chī P s. f. A crupper.

دهنا dhunnā S̱. (धुनन r. धु Shake, make trem- ble) v. a. 1. To comb, to card (cotton). 2. To beat (the head). سردهنا sir dhunnā, To beat oneʼs head with vexation, &c.

د dāl called دال مـﮩمله or غيرمعجمه is the eighth letter of the Arabic, and the tenth of the Persian alphabet. In the representation of Hindī words by the letters of these alphabets, it denotes the Nāgarī द (da); or, with ه (he) subjoined, ध (dha). In the numerical application of the Arabic al- phabet, د (dāl) stands for four; hence, in al- manacks, it represents the fourth day of the week, Wednesday: it is, moreover, used in astronomy to denote the planet Mercury, or the sign Leo of the Zodiack. This letter, in Persian, may be changed to ت (te); as, in بتر for بدتر Worse: or, when the next preceding letter is ,و,ا, or ي, or is moveable by a short vowel, it may be converted to ذ (ẕāl); as استاذ for استاد A master, گنبذ for گنبد A dome: (see Lumsdenʼs Persian Gram. p. 24). And, in Arabic words of the measure افتعال, when ,ذ,د or ز is the first letter of the root, د (dāl) is substituted for the servile ت (te); as, in ازدحام from زحم.

ديار diyār A (plur. mult. of دار) s. m. A coun- try, region, province.

دهرنا dharnā S̱. (धरण r. धृ Hold, bear) v. a. 1. To place, put down, lay, assume, put on, apply. 2. To give in charge. 3. To seize, catch, lay hold of, hold, keep. دهرنادينا يا بيٿهنا dharnā- denā or -baiṭhnā, A mode of extorting payment of a debt or compliance with any demand. See Asiat. Res. Vol. 4. Art. 22.

دهسانا dhasānā H (causal of دهسنا) v. a. To cause to be thrust into, to sink.
