چ che or chīm, called also jīm-i-fārsī or jīm-i-aﻌjamī, the seventh letter of the Persian alphabet, sounds like ch in the English word cheek. It does not occur in Arabic. If used to denote a number, according to the abjad, it stands for 3, like ج (jīm). The permutations of the letter چ are the following; into ژ as کاژ for کاچ Glass, a pine tree; into ز as پزشک pizishk for پچشک pichishk, A physician or apothecary; into ش as کاشي for کاچي Made of glass; into ج as کاج for کاچ; and, arabistically, into ص as صين for چين China. This letter corresponds to च in Sanskrit, and when aspirated, or with ه affixed, to छ.

چهل छल chhal S s. m. Fraud, trick, deception, knavery, artifice, evasion, excuse, subterfuge, pretence. چهل بل chhal bal, s. m. Force and fraud, stratagem, artifice, trick. چهل چهدر يا چهلچهدرم छलछिद्र chhal-chhidr or chhal-chhi- dram, s. m. Plot, stratagem. چهل چهدري chhal- chhidr-ī, adj. Deceitful, fraudulent.

چوا chauwā S̱. s. m. 1. (चतुःपाद) A quadru- ped (particularly oxen). 2. See چپا chappā.

چلون chilwan H s. f. A skreen for keeping out the glare, a venetian blind, a lattice.

چچورنا chachornā H v. a. To suck (a dry substance from which nothing can be obtained).

چستا chustā P. (from چست) adj. Tight, fitting well (as, clothes).

چرپراهٿ charparāhaṭ H s. f. Smarting.

چهوني chhaunī S̱. (see چهاوني chhāʼonī) s. f. Bar- racks, cantonments.
