جوهر jauhar A (from Pers. گوهر) s. m. f. 1. A gem, jewel, pearl. 2. Skill, knowledge. 3. Matter, substance, essence (distinguished from accident). 4. Virtue, worth, merit. 5. Blackish marks in the steel of well tempered scimitars. 6. adj. Bright, glittering. جوهردار jauhar-dār, A sci- mitar marked with jauhar, q. v. جوهرکرنا jau- har karnā, To kill oneʼs self, to commit suicide. (When the Hindūs are attacked by a force too great for them to resist, they sometimes, in such cases, slaughter or burn their own wives and children, and then take to flight, or are them- selves slain; and, this act of killing their wives, &c. in such extremities, they call jūhar or jau- har).
