شوال shauwāl A s. m. The tenth month of the Muhammadan year; on the first day of which the festival of Bairām, or īﻌd is celebrated, being the first day after the musalmān Lent; and, on this day it is customary to make presents, &c.

شوق shauḳ A (Heb. q. d. motion or ten- dency towards any point, from To walk hastily, to run about) s. m. 1. Desire, inclina- tion, love, eagerness, avidity, fondness. 2. Gaye- ty, cheerfulness. 3. شوقيه shauḳiya A s. m. The part of an epistle which follows the complimental address.

شوهر shauhar P s. m. A husband.

شوکت shaukat A (from شوک) s. f. State, dignity, magnificence, majesty. شوکت البعير shaukatu-l-baʼīﻌr, A thistle.

مشوش mushauwash A (part. pass. II. of شوش) adj. 1. Disturbed, confused, intricate. 2. Dis- tressed, uneasy, perplexed.

نوشو naushau P adj. New, recent, fresh, young; s. m. (dakh.) A newly married man, bridegroom (Harris).

پيشور peshaur P. s. m. Name of a city, properly پيشاور pesh-āwar, built by Akbar. The word im- ports "an advanced post," as it is the next town to the Afg̠ẖāns.

پيشوري peshaur-ī P. s. f. 1. A kind of slipper made in Peshaur. 2. A kind of rice.
