قانون ḳānūn G. (Gr. kanwn) s. m. 1. Rule, regula- tion, statute, canon, institute, system. 2. A dulcimer, or harp. قانونگو ḳānūn-go, s. m. An officer in each district, acquainted with its cus- toms, the nature of the tenures of the land, &c. قانونگوٴي ḳānūn-go-ī, s. f. The office of a ḳā- nūn-go, q. v.

مجنون majnūn A (part. pass. of جنّ Heb. and Chald. ) 1. adj. Insane, in love. 2. n. prop. The name of a celebrated lover, whose amours with Lailạ̄ are the subject of a poem by Ni- z̤āmī.

مجنونيت majnūn-īyat A. s. f. Insanity.

مسنون masnūn A (part. pass. of سنن) adj. 1. Legal, legalized, adopted into use, meritorious. 2. Circumcised.

ممنون mamnūn A (part. pass. of منّ) adj. Obliged, receiving a favour, favoured.

مکنون maknūn A (part. pass. of کنّ Heb. ) adj. Concealed, secret, hidden. درمکنون durr-i-maknūn, A pearl (large and valuable).

ن nūn The twenty-fifth letter of the Arabic and twenty-ninth of the Persian alphabet, corre- sponds to न in Sanskrit. It is one of the dental letters, and has the sound of the English n, with the following exceptions. 1. When it is quiescent in the middle or end of a word, and follows a madda or simple long vowel, it has a very slight nasal sound; as, in زبون Bad, زمان Time, زمين The earth, ماندن To remain: this is called نون غنب nūn-i-g̠ẖunna. If, how- ever, the word at the end of which it occurs be so placed in composition that the ن become moveable by iẓāfat, it ceases to be nasal and resumes its original sound as a dental letter. 2.
