ديوالي dewālī S̱. (दीपाली from दीप A lamp, and आली A row) s. f. A Hindū festival (ce- lebrated on the day of the new moon of kārtik: when the Hindūs, after bathing in the Ganges, or other river, put on their best attire, perform a srāddha, and at night worship Laksh̤mī. The houses and streets are illuminated all night: and, in Hindūstān, the night is universally spent in gaming).

ديوالي dīwālī P. (for دوال see دوالي dūʼālī) s. f. A leather strap, a belt.

ديوالي देवालय देव A god, and आलय A house dewālai S. s. m. A temple of idols.

ديواليئي dewāleʼī S̱. (from دينا and لينا) s. f. Barter, traffick. See دين لين den len.

ديواليا dewāliyā S̱. (from ديواليئي dewaleʼī, q. v. q. d. one who has dissipated all his fortune in ga- ming?) adj. Bankrupt.

ديوان dīwān P s. m. 1. A tribunal, divan. 2. A steward, a minister or secretary. 3. A book of poems, the rhymes of the different poems ending successively with every letter of the al- phabet. ديوان اعليٰ dīwān-i-aﻌlạ̄, s. m. A prime minister, wazīr. ديوان خاص dīwān-i-ḵẖāṣṣ, s. m. Privy council chamber, cabinet-council. ديوان خانه dīwān-ḵẖāna, 1. A tribunal, an office. 2. A court, hall, hall of audience. ديوان عام dīwān-i-āﻌm, Publick hall of audience. ديوان پن dīwān-pan, s. m. for ديوانه پن dīwāna-pan, q. v.
