ادهرامرت अधरामृत adharāmr̤ita S s.m. Nectar of the lips.

بلرام बलराम bal-rām S or balarāma, n. prop. The elder brother of Kr̤ish̤ṇa.

رام چندر रामचन्द्र Rāma-chandra S n. prop. Son of Dasaratha, and conqueror of Lankā or Ceylon. He was the seventh avatār; when the deity descended for the purpose of destroying Rāvaṇa, who, having obtained (for his devo- tion) a promise from Brahmā that he should not suffer death by any of the usual means, was become the tyrant and pest of mankind. The Devatās came in the shape of monkeys, as Rāvaṇa had gained no promise of safety from them; hence, Hanumāna was Rāmaʼs general. Rāmachandraʼs motherʼs name was Kausalyā. His younger brother Bharata was son of Ke- kayī, who was the cause of Rāmaʼs going to the desert to perform devotions, on the banks of the Pampā nadī, insisting that her son should reign the fourteen years that Rāma em- ployed in the devotion. It was while performing his devotion (or during his stay in the fo- rests) in company with Laksh̤maṇa (his brother by Sumitrā) that, while he was absent hunting, Rāvaṇa appeared as a beggar, and enticed away Sītā; which gave rise to the war detailed in the Rāmāyaṇa. Sītā was daughter of Rājā Janaka, who had promised to give her to any person who could break a certain bow; which

رام राम rām S s. m. The seventh Hindū incar- nation (see رام چندر Rāma-chandra); God. رام رام rām rām, A Hindū form of salutation. رام کـﮩ‍اني rām kahānī, 1. The rāmāyaṇ. 2. A long story. رام نامي کپڙي rām-nāmī kapṛe, s. m. plur. Garments worn by the Vaish̤ṇavas or sectaries of Vish̤ṇu, imprinted all over with the name of Rāma.

رامانندي rāmānandī रामानंदीय S̱. s. m. A sect of Hindū faḳīrs, believers in Rāma.

راماوتار रामावतार rāmāvatār S s. m. The in- carnation of Vish̤ṇu in the person of Rāma. See رام چندر Rāma-chandra.

راماين रामायण rāmāyaṇ S s. f. An epick poem by Vālmīki, containing the history of Rāma. (Poems on the same subject and under the same title have been composed by other authors).

رامکيلي रामकेली rāmkelī S s. f. Name of a rāgiṇī or musical mode.

سالگرام शालग्राम sālagrām S s. m. A flinty stone, containing the impression of one or more ammonites, conceived by the Hindūs to represent Vish̤ṇu.

سنگرام संग्राम sangrām S s. m. Battle, war.

پرسورام parsūrām परशुराम S̱. n. prop. The sixth Avatār, descent upon earth or incarna- tion of Vish̤ṇu. This personage was the son of Jamadagni. He is, from his father, called Jāmadagni: and, the deity descended in this form to destroy the Kshatriyas (or Chh̤atrīs) who were become tyrannical. Renukā, wife of Jamadagni, was interrupted in bringing water from the river by Kārtavīrjārjuna, a prince of the Kshatriyas, who was sporting in the water with his thousand wives; for which Parasu- rāmaʼs father, Jamadagni, cursed him. The Kshatriya prince killed Jamadagni; and Jāma- dagni vowed not to leave a Kshatriya on the face of the earth. He is reported to have ex- tirpated them twenty one times; the women with child each time producing a new race: and, they say that there have been no Ksha- triyas since; those so called being of spurious breed, or Varṇasankars.
