ايسورتا ईश्वरता īswar-tā S s. f. Divinity, god- head.

سورا sūrā शूर S̱. s. m. A hero: see سور sūr, sign. 1. A wife thus addresses her husband, who is preparing for battle: سورا رن مين جايکي لوها کرو نسنک نامه چڙهي رنڐاپرو نا ته چڙهي کلنک Sūrā raṇ meṅ jāʼeke lohā karo nisank; nā muhi chaṛhe ranḍāparo, nā tuhi chaṛhe kalank. O hero, when you enter the combat, wield your sword without fear; so shall I never suffer widowhood, nor you disgrace.

سورات saurāt H s. f. (dakh. i. q. حرص) Avarice, greediness, eager desire, ambition.

سورات siva-rāt S or siva-rātra or siva-rātri (for शिवरात्रि) s. f. A festival held on the four- teenth of the dark fortnight in the month of Phālguna (February-March) in honour of the birth of the linga or phallus.

سوراتي saurāt-ī H adj. (dakh.) Greedy, avaricious, ambitious.

سوراخ sūrāḵẖ P s. m. A hole, orifice, passage.

سورانا saurānā H v. n. (dakh. i. q. بي تاب هونا) To be unable or impatient (?). H.S̱. سوراي جانا saurāʼe jānā, v. n. (dakh. i. q. بي تاب هونا) To be unable or impatient (?).

سوراني siva-rānī S̱. s. f. The queen of Siva, Pār- watī.

سوربير sūr-bīr S (शूरवीर) s. m. A hero.

سورت sūrat A s. f. A chapter or division of the ḳurʼān: see سوره sūra. ¶ saurat, s. f. Impetus, force, violence, power, height (of glory).

سورتا शूरता sūr-tā S s. f. Valour, heroism. سورتا دهاري sūrtā-dhārī, Heroick.

سورج sūraj सूर्य्य S̱. s. m. The sun. سورج گہن sūraj-gahan (सूर्य्यग्रहण) s. m. Eclipse of the sun.

سورج مکهي sūraj-mukh-ī सूर्य्यमुखी S̱. s. f. 1. Sunflower (Helianthus annuus). 2. A kind of fan, or parasol.

سورداس sūr-dās S (सूरदास) n. prop. Name of a Hindī poet and singer who was blind; hence a blind man is called sūrdās.

پرسورام parsūrām परशुराम S̱. n. prop. The sixth Avatār, descent upon earth or incarna- tion of Vish̤ṇu. This personage was the son of Jamadagni. He is, from his father, called Jāmadagni: and, the deity descended in this form to destroy the Kshatriyas (or Chh̤atrīs) who were become tyrannical. Renukā, wife of Jamadagni, was interrupted in bringing water from the river by Kārtavīrjārjuna, a prince of the Kshatriyas, who was sporting in the water with his thousand wives; for which Parasu- rāmaʼs father, Jamadagni, cursed him. The Kshatriya prince killed Jamadagni; and Jāma- dagni vowed not to leave a Kshatriya on the face of the earth. He is reported to have ex- tirpated them twenty one times; the women with child each time producing a new race: and, they say that there have been no Ksha- triyas since; those so called being of spurious breed, or Varṇasankars.
